12 Moments of Anime: Mihoshi’s Glomp-Ability

day04-00

Oh yes, the girl has skills. Annoying fangirls at conventions wish they were as good as Mihoshi. But alas, they are not. Maybe because they’re nowhere near cute or charming enough to get away with it. Something the very cute Mihoshi from Sora no Manimani has no trouble with.

So for the fourth day (still doubled up on the fifth day) I present, once again no moment in particular, but just Mihoshi’s glomping. There’s so much of it that it might as well be the whole series…or rather, Mihoshi herself.

I still haven’t finished Sora no Manimani. It was a decent series, but its not the sort that can be anything good adapted into 13 episodes. I’m still on episode 10 and I just have no real motivation to finish it because I’m sure there’s really nothing special presented as an end. That’s just the way it is sometimes.

day04-01

I really wish studios were better at choosing what they can invest more time in. Sometimes a series just isn’t built to be popular, but they’re really shooting themselves in the foot by shoving all of these sorts of series into 12-episode boxes. One thing you could always say about the sadly ever more departing Gonzo is that they were good at figuring out what shows should be one broadcast season or two.

The problem with Sora no Manimani was just that it was an easy-going anime based on a quite long ongoing series. It was just quite simply impossible to get any sort of satisfying 12 episode series from it. 24 episodes and I think we would have had something. Enough time to cover some good manga stories with some time at the end to build up its own story to finish the anime off with a concluded ending.

day04-03

But life just doesn’t work out that way. A second season would be a nice, or a license for the manga since it’s not the sort of series I can ever really see being completely in scanlations. Easy-going, plotless manga like this don’t tend to ignite that sort of passion in scanlators.

day04-04

Anyway, the whole point of this rambling is that Sora no Manimani ignited a bit of passion in fangirls for a short time, mainly before it started airing. I’ll take like…a lot of the credit for that. Not all of it, but I randomly went on about it when I got the chance. Because it was one of those series that perfectly appeals to my fangirl nature. There’s one small thing to latch onto.

In this case the one small thing was our small little adorable Mihoshi. Who has a presence of someone twice her size!

day04-05

Seriously, look at that girl! She’s tiny! It make it that much more entertaining to see her go flying through the air at whoever her latest glomp-target is. Usually Saku which just brings on a whole bunch more fangirling with the shipping possibilities.

But despite what cynical guys believe, the appeal of Mihoshi doesn’t lie with her glomping and therefore acting out our deepest wishes. Please, I’ve never once wanted to glomp anyone in my life. I don’t see the appeal of combining hugging with violence. I would love to violently tackle someone and I just love hugs in general. But together? No thank you.

day04-06

I’ll just admit that I find them entertaining to watch from the outside.

But wait? Isn’t this post about Mihoshi’s “Glomp”-Ability? Yes. But relating to her character on a larger scale. The fact that she is so carefree and without inhibition and so confident? Yeah, sure go with that. Anyway, she’s all those things which makes her just do whatever the Hell she wants. Including glomping. Without any fear of being embarrassed or whatever.

day04-09

And yet she’s still adorable, not awesome. Just…adorable. How can this be?

Mihoshi is one of those rare girls that comes along and unites two warring versions of female fans. The ones that predominately like awesome female role models and the ones that like the uber-cute female girls. Some of us like both on a case by case basis. But I think I mostly like cute “weak” girls, but only the ones I like to see grow stronger (prime example being my one true anime girl love: Nagisa~).

day04-10

So Mihoshi? Well she has the benefits of both basic types without…well like without any negativity. She’s so easy to love.

I believe said it in a comment once rather than anywhere on the blog, so allow me to explain.

day04-07So this one’s less “glomp” and more just straight-up adorable.

day04-08Oh gawd blushing. Yes, this is very adorable.

See, you can have your basic cute girl. She’s very cute and moemoe and all that good stuff. The problem is you could look at her wrong and she’ll run away with her tail between her legs. She’s just one-dimensional and both guys with a spine find her to be dull and girls with a spine generally find her to be an insult…or something. I don’t, I have a long complicated thought process on that which boils down to ” yeah, weak girls only insult girls with secret complexes about being weak” because apparently I’m a bitch.

Of course being a bitch brings me to the next point. The strong girl or whatever will be a bitch. No exceptions. Either she’ll being a boring unbeatable hero or she’ll be a bitch. Now everyone can love a bitch, but come on. She’s still a bitch. She’s dragging everyone around and manipulating them and if it gets bad enough everyone in the fandom will be yelling at a certain character stopping another certain character from punching said bitch.

…Yeah…you all know who I’m talking about.

day04-12

Now Mihoshi has all of the dragging around  and such covered so she should be an extreme bitch. I mean she dives at people so hard that it’s gotta hurt. At the very least she has no respect for personal space!

But here’s the wonderful side of the sweet innocent girl coming into play. She’s actually sweet and naive and doesn’t realize she’s causing anyone any inconvenience and if she does, she gets mopey and apologizes. So…cute!

day04-11

I’m sure there’s some people out there that still might not fully get it, but Mihoshi was pretty damn near perfect

And yes…in case you didn’t notice I did basically choose this post as an opportunity to massive pic-spam any glompings I could gather before I needed to post this. And now let’s finish it off with a moment selected because I do sort of have a specific one that really gets me going.

INCOMING MASSIVE IMAGE SPAM FOR NO REASON! (Except that it’s adorable, shippy, and causes fangirling~)

day04-hug-7

And from there it turns into the usual silliness…

day04-hug-8

…which just made it even better in a completely different, but still cute way.

Okay, so it’s more of just an outright hug, but doesn’t the fact that it’s an outright hug just make it so much better? So…adorable.

Yeah, that scene in particular really makes me wish the anime had the chance continue longer so we could see just where things were going to go since they were so obviously going somewhere. Come on!

Wow, okay I need to check out this show now, those tackling hugs are way too adorable to miss. Even if nothing else happens, a good slice of life anime is always something nice to save up for those irritating work days.

Mind, Nodame can totally make a run for her money on the glomping :P (it’s just that Chiaki is too good at handling fangirls).

Gotta say I was definately more of a Hime fan myself. She went that series seriously unloved and I’d quite like that second season just to see her get some love from somwhere.

  3. Sai-kun Says:

Is it possible for Mihoshi to get even more adorable? :o

  4. ExecutiveOtaku Says:

Ah, Mihoshi. Despite my determined shipping for Fumie (President of the Student Council, President…of my heart) when I blogged the series, Mihoshi was simply delightful to watch in action. She even had something behind all the cute. I wouldn’t call it intelligence exactly, since she didn’t really process what she picked up on most of the time, but she definitely had a good feel for the moment at certain points. Like when her and Saku were in the homemade planetarium together or another moment which I won’t spoil for you from the final episode.

One season certainly wasn’t enough, and I’m really hoping a second will come along. I’m currently trying to get the manga bought and sent to me by a friend so I can continue the story. Even if it was just the 13 episodes, it was a really enjoyable show and got me back into astronomy to boot. Great post on a series that not enough people seemed to be paying attention to.

MIhoshi glomping!~ <3 Mihoshi glomping pic spam = win.

Unfortunately, like you said, the ending wasn't so good. I agree that it would've been so much better if it was 24 episodes. However, it was probably because it wasn't so popular as well.

Mihoshi's size is what is so great, and because most people wouldn't think of glomping others is probably why her glomping is so win. xDD

And I love the whole explanation about the cute girl and the strong girl. So true, and so well put. :D

And yes…in case you didn’t notice I did basically choose this post as an opportunity to massive pic-spam any glompings I could gather before I needed to post this.

Aha, her glompings totally deserve their own post. Also, I loved the end pic spam. One of my favorite scenes in the whole show. :D I agree with the continuation. It disappointed me that they gave us that scene but then no real conclusion to them.

  7. Animewriter Says:

Yes, I totally agree with you about Mihoshi’s glomp-ability, it only works because she very small and very cute. I’ve been glomped several times at different conventions and very seldom does it work because you have to get the proper weight ratio, girl about half the weight of the guy or it feels more like a football tackle.

  8. RP Says:

Ah, the Mii-chan glomping was undeniably wonderful. Between that and her inadvertent double entendres, I was totally smitten by her cuteness. Definitely agree that 12 episodes wasn’t enough to wrap things up, but to be fair to the studio, I believe the romance is still ongoing and unresolved in the manga. Hopefully, we’ll get another season that ties up the romance.
