Spring Anime (2009)

spring09

UPDATE (03/13): Added all airdates. (Too many are on the 2nd… )

It’s less than a month now until something I’m interested in for Spring will be airing. So I better get my preview post out before it stops being that much of a preview!

To be completely honest though, to me it looks like Spring mostly sucks though. I found lots of anime to preview because I have a vague interest in them, but there’s really not much at all I’m going to consider a “must watch”. Quite disappointing. I think Winter suited my tastes a lot more than Spring which is sad since there was so much less to look at.

Because we’re hitting Spring and carry-on series aren’t common. I still have Shugo Chara! to be blogging and apparently Sora wo Kakaeru Shoujo has 26 episodes so I’ll continue watching that (Honoka-chan~).

Also as another mention, the two Tsubasa Chronicle OVAs will be coming out soon (eventually) so I’m probably going to blog each of those. It’s an arc from the manga that really will give me a lot to say.

spring09corda

Series: Kiniro no Corda ~secondo passo~
Sequel: Kiniro no Corda ~primo passo~
Airdate: 03/26
Website: http://www.corda-primopasso.com/
Videos: primo passo OP
(ANN) (Wikipedia) (MAL)

Seiyuu: Reiko Takagi (Kahoko), Kisho Taniyama (Len), Kentarou Itou (Ryoutaro), Daisuke Kishio (Azuma), Jun Fukuyama (Keiichi), Masukaza Morita (Kazuki), Mamoru Miyano (Aoi)

Kahoko continues to improve her skills at the Seiso Academy participating in music competitions with the help of Lili, the music fairy, the students from the music department, and a new charming blond character.

Meh. I’ve caught up with the manga releases and I don’t find Aoi charming at all. Unfortunately, he’s the sort of bishie I do not care for. He’s too nice. I’m sure some girls get what I mean. But there’s another bishie in there that I don’t recognize and I look forward to seeing him.

*ahem* But um…my Corda fangirling was totally revived when I finally finished the series and then immediately read through all of the manga (story-wise: manga adaptation > anime adaptation). I’m looking forward to the new special (why not a whole series, huh!?) if only to see another opening where I get to see bishies in the wind. *dreamland*

Watching? Hell yes! Bishies and music ftw!
Blogging?
Well, it’s only got like two episodes or something, so probably.

spring09kon

Series: K-On!
Adaptation: Four Panel Manga by Kakifly
Airdate: 04/02
Website: http://www.tbs.co.jp/anime/k-on/
Videos: Voiceless Basic Promo, 30 Second CM
(ANN) (Wikipedia) (MAL)

Seiyuu: Aki Toyosaki (Yui), Asami Sanada (Sawako), Madoka Yonezawa (Ui), Minako Kotobuki (Tsumugi), Satomi Satou (Ritsu), Yoko Hikasa (Mio)

A story of 4 high school girls who are trying to save the light music club. However, they are the only members of the club, and none of them have any experience playing musical instruments or reading sheet music.

Well, it’s Kyo-Ani doing something new so that automatically warrants it a watch. For a while (the past year maybe?) all they’ve really done is sequels to stuff they did before. Unfortunately, this being a four panel manga full of girls, it doesn’t seem like it’s exactly “new” to me.

But I’ll probably like it. It doesn’t sound that interesting from the basic premise, but four panel comics never do.

Watching? Most likely, yes.
Blogging? 90% sure I won’t.

spring09asuracryin

Series: Asura Cryin’
Adaptation: Light Novel by Gakuto Mikumo
Airdate: 04/02
Website: http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/asura/
Videos: 30 Second CM, Recorded Trailer
(ANN) (Wikipedia) (MAL)

Seiyuu: Miyu Irino (Tomoharu), Haruka Tomatsu (Misao), Ai Nonoka (Kanade)
Sayuri Yahagi, Rie Tanaka, Eri Kitamura

The semi-serious school action story revolves around Tomoharu Natsume, a boy who has been haunted by a ghost girl who was a childhood friend.

I’m not sure what it is, but this series really pulled me in quite randomly and I’m really looking forward to it. I think just by the promo stuff I tend to think it has a lot of potential. The list of seiyuu certainly doesn’t hurt either (more Sayuri-san!). It has a really big cast of characters and usually series like that turn out to be series that suit my tastes (because I’m someone that prefers good characters over plot or anything else).

Watching? Most likely, unless my feelings towards this anime are way off.
Blogging? Since I don’t know much about the story I have no idea.

spring09hanasakeruseishounen

Series: Hanasakeru Seishounen
Adaptation: Manga by Natsumi Itsuki
Airdate: 04/05
Website: http://www3.nhk.or.jp/anime/hana/
Videos: Recorded Trailer
(ANN) (Wikipedia) (MAL)

Seiyuu: Aya Endo (Kajika), Daisuke Namikawa (Rumati), Daisuke Ono (Eugene), Jun Fukuyama (Carl), Toshiyuki Morikawa (Fan Li Ren)

A very powerful industrialist directs his daughter to pick a husband from three candidates he has chosen for her. They are to come into her life, and their uniqueness would cause her to recognize them immediately. All three of the candidates are outstanding. Well, it’s actually four… The story evolves along the lines of a power political mystery involving a small middle eastern country.

Well, it’s shoujo so that almost automatically means I watch it. Unfortunately it also seems to be a reverse harem which always gives me a “meh” feeling. Quite often I find no boy to like in reverse harems because they’re all disgustingly pretty with hair that’s longer than the main girl’s and they’re all either too flawed or not flawed enough and they piss me off! Obviously, there are exceptions with good reverse harems (like Corda, but even then there’s 2-3 boys that bother me) but promo picture alone almost makes me think that way. Though I’d say that’s really just because of the art. This is an old manga series.

Which is another reason I want to give it a chance. I always want to check out some older shoujo series, but the art bothers me so much that I never do. So, when an anime with an updated art style appears, I jump right on it! So…I have a feeling that I could like this one. I’m hopeful anyway.

Watching? If it doesn’t piss me off, yes.
Blogging? Most likely if I watch it, yes.

spring09tearstotiara1

Series: Tears to Tiara
Adaptation: VN by Leaf
Airdate: 04/05
Website: http://tearstotiara.jp/
Videos: Game OP, New Game OP, Promo
(ANN) (Wikipedia) (MAL)

Seiyuu: Makoto Ishii (Arthur), Toru Ohkawa (Arawn), Yuko Goto (Riannon)
Mai Nakahara, Rie Tanaka, Miyuki Sawashiro, Kana Ueda, Ami Koshimizu

A Demon King named Arawn was sealed away for 1,000 years. After a girl named Riannon released him, they started to travel together and she becomes emotionally attached to him.

Fantasy~ And it’s technically not a game adaptation that I would hate since it’s a VN. So it’s acceptable! And since I am enjoying watching White Album (as far as a well put together story goes) since Tears to Tiara is from the same company, I figure it’s a safe bet on another well put together story. Plus, some of the seiyuu are definite bonuses.

Watching? Almost a definite yes!
Blogging? Probably not.

spring09pandorahearts

Series: Pandora Hearts
Adaptation: Manga by Jun Mochizuki
Airdate: 04/02
Website: http://www.tbs.co.jp/anime/ph/
Videos: Voiceless Promo
(ANN) (Wikipedia) (MAL)

Seiyuu: Ayako Kawasumi (Alice), Junko Minagawa (Oz), Kousuke Toriumi (Raven)

Oz Bezarius, heir to one of the duke houses, has just turned fifteen. His life is rich and carefree, darkened only by the constant absence of his father. At his coming-of-age ceremony, however, everything changes. For no reason that he can discern, he’s cast into the prison known as the “Abyss”, only to be saved by a “chain” known as Alice, the bloodstained black rabbit. Why was he cast into Abyss, how does Alice factor into it all, and what does the organization known as “Pandora” want with him?

As soon as the anime was announced, I went ahead and read some of the manga and loved it. Somehow I ended up forgetting about it and didn’t get past more than a few chapters (really just the set up for the story). But I definitely enjoyed it and I think the potential for it to be a good anime is there. Series with action always have the potential to be an entertaining anime.

Watching? Yes!
Blogging? Probably not.

spring09hatsukoi

Series: Hatsukoi Limited
Adaptation: Manga by Mizuki Kawashita
Airdate: 04/11
Website: http://www.j-hatsukoi.com/
Videos: Promo
(ANN) (Wikipedia) (MAL)

Seiyuu: Mariya Ise, Takahiro Sakurai, Aki Toyosaki, Ayumi Fujimura, Minako Kotobuki, Rie Tanaka, Ryoko Shiraishi, Shizuka Itou

Middle-schooler Arihara Ayumi receives a love letter from a high-schooler, a very large and intimidating boy, Zaitsu Misao, asking her out. He begins to follow her around and then one day she is kidnapped by rivals of Misao and it then turns out that Ayumi may in fact be stronger than Misao himself.

So, the manga is done by the same person behind Ichigo 100% which I got bored with after the first series. Never read the manga, never looked into any of the OVAs or crap that came after. It’s just something that didn’t appeal to me. I couldn’t really root for any of the girls. And I watched that back when I was like…15 and incredibly easy to please.

But, the premise for this one sounds more interesting (with lots of girls with different stories that come together at some point…apparently) and there’s more girls so I’m sure to find someone I like. I’m willing to give it a chance anyway. Probably will drop it though.

Watching? A couple of episodes to see if anything grabs me.
Blogging? 90% sure I won’t.

spring09phantom

Series: Phantom ~Requiem of Phantom~
Adaptation: VN by Nitroplus
Airdate: 04/02
Website: http://www.phantom-r.jp/
Videos: Voiceless Promo
(ANN) (Wikipedia) (MAL)

Seiyuu: Ayahi Takagaki (Ein), Miyu Irino (Zwei)

A spate of mafia assasinations occurs in America, the work of the mysterious organization named Inferno. “Phantom” is their most strongest and capable assassin, however a lone tourist witnesses Phantom’s latest act of murder. He unwittingly exposes the top assassin’s true identity, a young girl named Ein. Witnesses are usually killed, but the man is captured and taken to be brainwashed into “Zwei”, Inferno’s newest assassin, with no memory of who he is. From this point on, Zwei is drawn into a world of conspiracy, deceit and violence.

Well, I was interested in this series for about 2.5 seconds before I read that it was being done by Bee Train. Eww…Bee Train. But they managed to get a cast of seiyuu that I’m pretty interested in. Also the trailer doesn’t look that bad, but when it’s Bee Train you never know what they’re going to pull in the actual show. Eww…Bee Train…

Watching? Maybe
Blogging? No.

spring09iinchou

Series: Gokujou!! Mecha Mote Iinchou
Adaptation: Manga by Tomoko Nishimura
Airdate: 04/04
Website: http://mechamote.tv/
Videos: Recorded Trailer
(ANN) (Wikipedia) (MAL)

Seiyuu: Mana Ogawa (Mimi)

Mimi Kitagami is a kind, level-headed girl who aims to be the best, coolest student council president of her high school class. However, three trouble-making boys are always causing her grief — and she has a one-sided crush on one of the boys, Ushio Tojo.

Fansub wiki you have failed me! Well, at least by the time I decided to edit this in this series was added to the list, but I found out about it like…the day after I posted my preview. However, I couldn’t find any information (like images and websites) outside the plot so I just said screw it and kept it to myself.

But it’s shoujo, which as I’ve said before, means an automatic look. Even cuter (better?) is that it’s a shoujo that’s geared at that younger age group that always gets my favorite shoujo (lol). Almost all my favorite shoujo series have either been in Nakayoshi (CardCaptor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, Shugo Chara!, Mermaid Melody, Sailor Moon, many etc’s) or Ribon (…Any Arina Tanemura series, Marmalade Boy, Kodomo no Omocha, etc.). This one is from Ciao (Kirarin Revolution, Naisho no Tsubomi, Beauty Pop, Wedding Peach, Revolutionary Girl Utena). All of them are geared towards…probably preteens I’d say, but all of them also have a classic series that transcends age. Of course I don’t expect a classic here, but I expect to enjoy it since I’ve enjoyed almost everything I read (or watch) from Nakayosi, Ribon, or Ciao.

Now this being a continuous watch is another matter. I can just as easily imagine a series from those magazines becoming filler hell. Because I remember that all the anime adaptations I’ve seen ended up being over 26 episodes (except Naisho no Tsubomi’s OVA). So um…yeah. There’s a potential problem. Still will give it a try though!

Watching? Probably
Blogging? Maybe

-

There are a couple of other series I’m interested in, but won’t bring up because I don’t think it’s likely I’ll watch them. Or at least likely that I’ll talk about them on this blog.

Information was found in various places. Mainly the Fansub Wiki, Anime News Network, Wikipedia, and MyAnimeList. Plus the official sites of course. Basically anything you see linked and then the actual list of anime to go through from the Fansub Wiki.

I’ll probably be blogging the First Impressions for almost all of these anime, even if I give an absolute no for blogging. Unless I have absolutely nothing to say. That does happen.

As far as blogging for Spring goes, I have a few plans on making things easier and more enjoyable for myself again. Once the plans are clear I’ll do a post to make them clear for every one else as well. ^_^

A widget will probably appear on the sidebar again (like usual) for when I make updates to the preview. Adding video links and such. Even (occasionally…rarely) adding another series in.

Oh god. That reminds me, it’s already Spring and myself would need to make one of these myself.

Don’t say that. I was actually looking forward to the Spring series, but I can see why you’d think it sucks. Fortunately for me, I definitely have two things I surely want to blog about this season…much better than Winter I guess.

Cool. We have 7 series in common.

Yeah I know what you mean. I wish they had made a shinkuro or another fun shojo manga adaption. sigh.

I know what you mean about Aoi. I usually only like “nice” boys if they have someother flaw. Like they’re stupid or overly naive or something. Nice sensible boy=boring.

  3. Meball Says:

I can see some good series there. I’m looking forward to K-On!, Tears to Tiara and Pandora Hearts and Saki. And I may watch the others, Asura Cryin’ seems interesting and Phantom… argh blood >~<’

  4. Nazarielle Says:

Bleh, I need to get around to looking ahead, but I’m way too lazy. Plus Spring means Toradora is going to be over and I don’t want to acknowledge that T_T

The art from Hatsukoi Limited reminds me of Kimi Kiss. Not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

Tears to Tiara is STACKED. Holy shit. Nakahara Mai, Ueda Kana, and Tanaka Rie? Damn, I’m definitely watching that no matter how bad it is.

Asura Cryin’ looks… meh. Kitamura Eri means I’ll give it a shot though :p

K-On makes me think KyoAni saw the popularity of Haruhi’s band performance and decided to make something with a bunch of girls singing and see what would happen. I didn’t really recognize any of the voice actors you listed, but like most everyone else, I’ll give it a try just because it’s KyoAni.

  5. steelbound Says:

I was looking over the spring list last week and I couldn’t help but be disappointed – if only because Toradora and Clannad will have ended. There’s not many shows that seem like winners but I figure there has to be a diamonds in the rough.

The only shows that I’m really looking forward to is the Full Metal Alchemist remake, K-On!, and the new season of Hayate (I’m really curious with the studio change to JC Staff will improve it or not). There’s a few shows that interest me which you already mentioned: Hanasakeru Seishounen for the artwork and Daisuke Ono, Hatsukoi Limited because JC Staff is doing it, Pandora Hearts for the interesting artwork and because Zexcs is doing it (they get points for doing the really good Wagaya no Oinari-sama last year).

There’s a couple other shows that are interesting me: Ristorante Paradiso for the artwork and the story potential but it’s from a company I’ve never heard of before and Eden of the East because it’s being done by Production IG and it could be interesting.

  6. Anca Says:

Lately, Bee-Train has been nothing short of fantastic. I can’t forgive them for what they did to Tsubasa and .hack//SIGN’s pseudo-sequel, but they seem to have evened out their bumps.

Also, Eden of the East (done by mostly the same people as GitS: SAC and Seirei no Moribito) and Guin Saga (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwmu19f97lc) should be worth checking out.

And – I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT LA CORDA D: Thanks for reminding me the sequel will be airing!

  7. FuyuMaiden Says:

7: I’ll say whatever I want to! RAWR *unnecessary anger*

Heh, but seriously, I’m not surprised if people don’t agree with me. I was the weird girl during Winter who found a lot to watch. This season however looks like Fall with a couple of great shows and everything else is just fine. Not much really stands out. Aside from K-On! and Full Metal Alchemist I can’t see any series being that popular.

warriorhope: We do? Well I’ll have to check out your preview ASAP.

I know. We just have one new shoujo this year! Hopefully…ShinKuro in Fall? Maybe?

Oh I love nice stupid boys. So cute.

Meball: Oh there are some good series, but looking at the preview I don’t think there’s a lot I will enjoy the same as some of the anime I’m watching now. Though I guess you can’t have a favorite every season.

Nazarielle: Just wait for more previews to come out and let every one else do the work!

Ah. That’s it. Hatsukoi Limited does remind me of KimiKiss. Except with likely less boring and naive characters. I’m good with that.

Tears to Tiara must be the seiyuu anime of the season then. A worthy successor to White Album? (Except no, because there’s no Nana-sama!)

The problem with Asura Cryin’ is that there’s no real information about it and all I can find is art from the light novel rather than the anime. Frustrating!

I didn’t recognize any of the seiyuu either actually (except Asami Sanada). Which is pretty typical of KyoAni starting something entirely new. Aya Hirano wasn’t well known when Haruhi first aired either.

steelbound: Yeah, i think that’s where a lot of my disappointment in Spring is coming from. My favorite shows will be ending and nothing seems exciting enough to take their places. I have Skip Beat, Clannad, ToraDora all ending and I don’t like it.

So it seems the biggest problem of Spring is that no one really knows what to expect from it. It looks like some stuff could be good, but not much to get excited about.

  8. Xiao Jie Says:

Hmm, kinda have the same feeling for Spring. Not that any of them don’t interest me or anything but just that they’re not interesting enough to blog…or I don’t know enough/have much to say about them so maybe that’s why. Huh, I think I’m coming down with lag-blogger-whatever syndrome again. Oh noes…

Well, anyways…I think I’m watching 5 of the shows on your list so far. Lots of them have impressive casts so definitely looking forward to that (hopefully that can keep me pass the first few episodes).

    I’m gonna generally avoid all the reverse (or whatever) harems, though, but this season seems to be almost full of them. -_-;; Weird, this never bothered me before but it does now (why are they suddenly all popping up?). Then again, I like a good balance of male and female characters in a series, I guess. Too much of one or the other makes me feel sick for some reason. o.O;

Hmm, yea, I guess that’s it (lol, my comments are getting shorter and shorter *freaking out*). Maybe I should start organizing my own list soon or it’ll be a mess again whut, since when were you not? |D;.

    Thanks for the preview. ^^

  12. 紅夢 Says:

    hikaristar007: You do mean 金色のコルダ ~secondo passo~?

Unlike Winter, save for a few, I might watch Phantom ~Requiem of Phantom~ since it’s a VN by the violence, psychological, horror loving Nitro+, and that it’s going to be produced by Bee Train. Granted, I don’t know anything at all about it, but it’s Nitro+. So I’m watching this no matter what.

The others on this post? Aside from 金色のコルダ、ティアーズ・トゥ・ティアラ, and K-On, there aren’t many that interest me. Plus I’m still on that Shoujo spree, so adding in more time-sinks will kill whatever free time I have.

Oh and the Valkyria Chronicles anime, anyone? Gotta love the scouts, snipers, and nearly-invincible-one-girl-army Alicia. Aside from the leads, just wondering who they’ll animate out of Squad 7. Hoping for at least Juno and Freesia.

  18. blossomgirl101 Says:

Ah Spring, lol, I almost forgot to do my post on the spring season (how irresponsible xD) so I’ve got to get to that soon. The spring season seems ok, but there aren’t very many shows that look interesting to me. But the series that ARE interesting, I am definitely looking forward to.

Asura Cryin’ actually doesn’t look bad for an anime with a one sentence summary. And for some reason, I like Tomoharu Natsume’s hairstyle. XD

Usually old mangas have plots that aren’t bad, but the animation usually always turns me away. I’m not too picky on the animation, but when they adapt it to an anime, the animators should at least try to improve (but still keep similar to the original) the animation.

Pandora Hearts looked interesting just looking at the picture, and reading your response to it makes me even more excited! :D

  22. Kitsune Says:

Unlike Winter, Spring has many anime I want to watch and blog, so making a decision will not be easy.

One of the anime that I’ll check out from your list is Hanasakeru Seishounen. I posted a preview a while ago with some manga excerpts. The anime has an excellent seiyu cast, including Sebastian :P , and will involve love and politics :) I’ll have to see a couple episodes before I commit to blogging though :)

  23. FuyuMaiden Says:

Xiao Jie: Well, I’m now figuring out that rarely anything is interesting enough to blog. At least if you intend on saying more than a paragraph. I think I started finding that people who blog a lot usually only do a paragraph or so of thoughts…and then maybe a summary for the rest of it.

Yup, impressive casts is one good thing to look forward to. Hopefully they’re in anime that utilize their good casts.

Well, it’s because they’re popping up suddenly. Like last Spring when everyone was annoyed with Fanservice anime (more than usual) because we had quite a few at once. But balance really is best.

I know Kobato is such a Spring anime. On the upside though Fall is going to be Awesome no matter what.

hikaristar007: Well I assume you mean secondo passo, but no matter what I agree. Corda is awesome~

wingstodust: I think it will be too. And a little bit of uh-oh on Hatsukoi Limited…now I’m worried. Maybe if it doesn’t work out I should check out the manga.

Cure Peach: If you have enough anime, you have enough. But you can always add more to just watch.

紅夢: Shoujo spree is good. If there’s a shoujo spree, ignore whatever spring has to offer. AHAHAHA! (Of course being me, I should be ignored)

After putting out my preview I’ve been hearing a lot about Valkyria Chronicles…I’m guessing that’s something I should check out as well?

phossil: The more I see of it (promo materials and such) the more promising Asura Cryin’ seems.

Omisyth: Well it seems to have quite a few anime with substance and that’s not usually suited for my tastes. lol

Effyness: Well, it’s airing on TV, but it’s not a full season. It kind of stinks.

Though if they’re following the same storyline as the manga, I’d say all the other guys are still there. They all mostly have their stories that have appeared in what I’ve read.

Leesah: I have no idea who plans on subbing it. The fansub wiki would be a good place to check that out.

blossomgirl101: Spring is a complicated thing it seems (lol). Some people it’s perfect for, others it’s…not.

So I’m not alone in disliking the animation. The only thing that holds me back from watching so many good series.

Ah. That’s it. Part of what’s so awesome about Pandora Hearts is just how cool everything looks (especially the characters…especially Alice~).

kanzeon: I suppose every company deserves another shot. If I keep giving Gonzo another try, Bee Train deserves their chance at redemption.

Awww…I liked Munto. I thought it had plenty of awesomeness. Though I can see how others would disagree. Pure fantasy isn’t that interesting to some others.

Hinano: Nothing’s probably going to be as great as Spring 2006 for some time. I guess the most anyone can hope for is one really good show these days.

Murasaki: Good plan. I however feel compelled to always pick up something new. lol

Kitsune: Ooo, I’ll be sure to check out that post since Hanasakeru Seishounen is really becoming one of the anime I’m looking forward to most.

Only if you find war and politics (And Jun Fukuyama) interesting. There’s just huge hype around it because of how impressive the game was, graphics and gameplay-wise. Hopefully, the series will be friendly to those who haven’t touched the game. But if not, and you have a PS3, get the game anyways. I just don’t like its focus on beating each mission quickly for the best rewards. Bleh.

Oh gawd, the Shoujo Spree. 金色のコルダ was good and kept my interest, mostly because I rooted for Kaho, Mori, Tsuchiura, and Shimizu throughout. I also found it kinda funny they were playing a few pieces that would take most people months to learn too. Like the Revolutionary Etude by Chopin. Fun stuff. T_T

Next up are ないしょうのつぼみ, Precure, and Angelique. Then the Spring Season and its new set of shoujo shows. *nods*

Fuyumaiden: I may watch Anime for the Heck of it. I’m actually leaning towards Maria Holic and White Album but if I do I probably wont’t blog it because College is such a pain. Not to mention my Cousin. -.-
