Yes. You heard right. A Shoujo-Only Moe Tournament, hosted by Xiao Jie at ěk-sěn’trĭk. And as a very big fan of both shoujo and moe, I’m making sure everyone I can tell about it hears about it.
This is a tournament that only involves female characters from shoujo anime. If you’re a fan of any shoujo anime, surely you’ve seen your moe girl of choice knocked out early in a Moe competition (or ignored completely). You want to see some real, fair, and equal competition for your that girl, right? RIGHT!
Well at least you have if you pay attention to the competitions, if you don’t, well…now you know.
Of course, the more people (and variety in people) voting, the better. So that’s why I’m spreading the word.
I also suggest other people interested take the time to promote if you want proper variety. If it’s just us fangirls, then it’s…well it’s just girls.
So I’m hoping we get some fanboys in here. I know you fanboys that enjoy shoujo on occasion (or quite often) are out there. So come join! In a shoujo tournament it’s likely that girls may be the majority, but I think having a MASSIVE majority of fangirls will be boring. So unless boys want the girls to overtake the meaning of moe in this tournament, I suggest you join in.
I’m promoting to get some variety and I’m hoping that others interested will promote as well. The planned deadline for nominations is Mid-March and the tournament is set to start on April 1st (despite that date it’s not April Fool’s…I’m sure).

Now why is this tournament being held? Because fans of Shoujo and moe want adorable shoujo girls given some proper recognition. They get knocked out in such early rounds at least partially owed to the fact that shoujo isn’t popular enough.
But give the shoujo girls some credit. The most moe girl of all is from a Shoujo series. A mahou shoujo series. The original and best moe, Kinomoto Sakura!
It’s just sad to see that since Sakura, shoujo girls are so often shunned. So that’s reason enough for a Shoujo-Only Moe Tournament. For you fanboys I know will say something because you don’t like girls getting involved in your fanboy competitions (GROW UP!).
*ahem* Anyway, I believe the direct reasoning comes from the last SaiMoe. Having one of the most worthy girls eliminated in the first round of SaiMoe is just…too much to bear. (Ah! My twintail tsundere idol Queen Utau~ The pain never goes away.)
You really can’t say that you hate moe if you’re a fan of shoujo either. Not unless you hate absolutely every female character in every series. Because with the way “moe”s meaning has been expanding, it can be mad to fit any single character trait.
Personally for me, I see it as “whoever fills me with the most aww-ing and giggling” also how strong the desire is to forcibly hug the character and how often I demand a plushie to forcibly hug comes into play.

But I’ll keep the reasons and explanations short. Hopefully I’ve convinced those of you who aren’t pulled in by the title “Shoujo-Only Moe Tournament” alone to check it out as well.
The nominating is currently going on. A few of the requirements for submissions are: Shoujo Anime airing in 2008 (OVAs allowed, but no manga), FEMALE characters (no traps!), filler characters allowed (but only ten per series), nominate as many recurring characters as you want. But you should really check out the full rules in the post (obviously).
Aslo something for those who overthink and need clarification like me: Mascot Characters are allowed to be nominated (as long as they fit the other requirements)
The list of definitely approved anime is on the SoMT page on ěk-sěn’trĭk. If you think something else is shoujo, you can give it a try if it aired in 2008. I think the list is pretty thorough though. The only thing on it that seems amiss to me is that only one shoujo OVA could be found in all of 2008 (Naisho no Tsubomi), so…yeah. If you know of any other OVA bring it up so it can get added to the list.
One thing I can tell you is that romance does not equal shoujo. I know there are still people out there who think VN adaptations are shoujo, but they’re not. If the series seems like it might appeal to guys more than girls, it’s not shoujo. An unreliable idea to go on: Is it mostly seen through a male’s perspective? Then there’s a good chance it’s not shoujo.
If you really can’t figure it out, try wikipedia. It will often give you your answer. And if you can’t find an answer, then submit your character. Worst thing that can happen is that they just won’t get in. Not very different than if you didn’t submit them at all.

So! Come! Participate in the Shoujo-Only Moe Tournament. Get ready and nominate your adorable shoujo character of choice. Then cheer them onto victory!
If you don’t participate, you have no one to blame but yourself if any girls you like fall early. So far the nominations are already building up quite nicely. If my count was correct there’s 22 girls nominated so far (that are likely accepted). Which actually already meets the requirement, so the nominating will very likely close in Mid-March.
Now you’ve heard all I’ve had to say. Get to nominating already!

Sounds fun! I don’t really know what the word “moe” means though…

Lucy: Well, I describe moe as the most aww-inducing girl and stuff, but I’d say for the simplest basic-est answer I’d equal moe to cute (cute as in personality and such more than appearance). For more explaining, wikipedia might be mildly useful.

Xiao’s idea is awesomeness. That’s all I have to say

*GLOMPS YOU!!!!!* x33333333333333333
Omg, thank you!
And thank you again for addressing this to the fanboys in such a nice, wonderful FuyuPWNSNOWOBEIMEH!!! way. xDDD
I totally want boys to participate in this as well because if it’s only just girls, it wouldn’t be a bad thing but it would be like you said. Too boring. Which is why I think I’m going to invite 7-san to be a guest host, too, so I can read his opinion about shoujo girls in general. I want intelligent, male insights on the whole vast field of moe and not just fanboys who would go for girls with the biggest chest while they’re putting on a “cute” (*shudder* ewgh) face. To me, that’s not moe at all…that’s just excessive fanservice and no more than that. -_-;
And (sadly) since there are fanboys who do just that, then they shouldn’t complain about girls wanting their own favorites to win purely because they think their anime girls are cute. Moe, like what nazarielle-san said in his one of his past posts, is an abstract term. So it’s pretty much open to the limitless sky. Not restricted to a single girl who wins a popularity contest.
Ah, but I’ll save more of my rantings for the later events. Haha
I really thank you so much again for all the help you’ve given me (I’ll continue to do that over the course of the tournament so I apologize if I might become annoying, ^^; ) and I’ll surely give you an honorary mention and gift when the contest is over. As the proud founder of SoMT, I have to so you shall accept it no matter what
so I hope it turns out good *sucks at being artistic* T_T! >:DYep. I have so many plans on how to make this tournament even more exciting so please look forward to it! ;D

warrior: Thank you, hun~! *showers you with shoujo goodies* <333
Xiao Jie’s last post…ěk-sěn’trĭk’s Unofficial Shoujo-Only Moe Tournament
February 18th, 2009
An Unofficial SaiMoe Tournament meant for Shoujo/Josei series only…
*Thinks*
Despite being a fan of Shoujo/Josei series, I’ll probably hold out on this. I can already see it ending up as a popularity contest rather than a contest based on “Moe”. Maybe I might nominate a character or two, but aside from the normal “guys” who prefer fanservice, I really don’t see it being an accurate judge of “Moe” as a whole.
This is especially true if characters from Skip Beat or Shugo Chara happen to win or take the majority. But then again, I could be wrong…There’s always that chance.

warriorhope: Indeed. *agrees 100%*
Trishy: Basically. At least I’d say that’s how it is for girls about other girls. Heck, even fanboys admit to being that way (though less girly about it, lol).
Xiao Jie: *return glomp because glomps are fun~*
I can only hope that they will listen. Fanboys are such stubborn, tsundere boys when it comes to girls getting involved in their moe debates. (They don’t want us girls to know about their secret likes)
Yay! If 7 is a guest host he can have yet another harem opportunity and then we can all tease him some more.
As far as other smart intelligent fanboys go, there’s someone I’m hoping takes an interest, but I’m keep who to myself so that I don’t scare him away. We fangirls are too good at scaring boys away with our GIRL POWAH!
Yes! Moe is an abstract term. I may prefer the classic moe (Sakura-chan~) but anyone can find anything moe. I just absolutely will never see any appeal in one-dimensional chibi characters (like from Lucky Star). Except Eru…she’s an exception. She’s too darn cute.
It’s impossible for you to become annoying. I love your rambling and thanking and all of that. Oh and an honorary mention and gift. I want to see~
If I’m the best helper do I get the best gift?紅夢: Don’t be a spoilsport.
It’s not meant to be a judge of moe as a whole, but just among the shoujo girls. The ones who can’t compete with the fanboy bait of random loli’s and one-dimensional characters.
If someone from Shugo Chara wins (meaning Rima or Utau) I’d actually say that’s a good measure of moe. I mean as a mahou shoujo anime, moe is almost automatically present. Though if Amu wins, it will be more about being a popularity contest (though she has her tsuntsun and shy moe charms). If anyone from Skip Beat wins (since they all pretty much break out of the shoujo and moe molds to some extent), I’d say it’s a popularity contest.

You really like teasing me with that harem thing, don’t you Fuyu…

yes yes yes…. this is totally righteous… i couldn’t agree more… we need a separate category for each genre .. then mebbe most girls will have a chance… and if i may ask … what about those anime that straddle genres eh? oh well…. and not all fanboys go for big bewbies or DFCs …. then again they can’t be called fanboys….
oh well.. I’m voting

To my knowledge Sakura has own the first SaiMoe (although this is just from Wikipedia), Sakura is like the defination of Moe to me. Cute but also with a personality. The first Saimoe has Sakura coming first, Tomoyo 3rd (CCS one, not clannad ^_^”) and Doremi from Ojamajo running a tie with Tomoyo. So techically when SaiMoe started, it was mainly characters from shoujo series who win. But that was when moe-centric shows wasn’t so popular. So the only charactrs that would fit the typical-defination of Moe are from shoujo series.
If I have to vote for the most moe character from a shoujo series, it MUST be Rima-tan. Utau wouldn’t be what I call moe, half the reason why I love Utau is Nana Mizuki. I dont find Amu-chan moe either. I find Kairi more moe then Utau and Amu-chan added together.
I personally agree with 2008 SaiMoe, Kagami getting first place? Yesh Kagami <3 As much as I love shoujo, there is a definately a lack of good shoujo anime. Good shoujo animie doesn’t come all the time. I’m still wishing for a KyoAni treatment for a shoujo series, I am depressed that 801-chan is canceled, well…I currently adore munto <3
Please have a Moe-Tournament for male characters please. I will SO vote for Chiaki-sempai or Dojo-KyoKan. Sorry Ikuto fangirls, as great as Ikuto is, I dont find him moe. Male tsunderes FTW.

7: Of course!
lord_jagganth: Exactly, SaiMoe has become shallow I think. More about popular series and which girl looks the best (sometimes) rather than about personality and such.
LilaChan: Yup, Sakura was the first winner and the second winner was Riku from DNAngel I believe. But no shoujo girls since there. It saddens me since I do agree that shoujo girls are the most moe.
I’m not sure how you can find Kagami moe, but not Utau. Since I find them to be in the same basic realm of tsundere, except Utau has some confidence (bitchiness) and such added on. I find Utau very, very moe when she gets all blushy or weak (like in episode 43). But that’s part of the wonderfulness of moe~ Everyone sees it differently.
As for Amu, well it’s only when she gets all tsuntsun and embarrassed that I find her moe. I find her the least moe out of my three favorite girls anyway. Oh, but then again you have to include her chara-nari’s sometimes. In which case Amu has like…four different moe appeals (well maybe no Amulet Spade since that’s basically just Amu’s cool side).
I don’t think a moe tournament for boy would be that successful. An overall bishie contest would be good though.
I’d disagree since Ikuto recently became the cutest anime boy ever to me. At least when he’s a little kid. I find moe as the urge to glomp, cuddle, and protect something so in that way Ikuto would be moe to me. But I still don’t find boys moe at all. To me it’s mostly a girl thing.
